Stephen Pastan

MD

Dr. Pastan is Professor of Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine and Medical Director of the kidney and pancreas transplant program at the Emory Transplant Center. He is a graduate of Amherst College, and he attended the Harvard Medical School. He completed his internal medicine and renal fellowship training at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center).

Dr. Pastan has over 30 years of experience caring for chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and transplant patients. He serves as Medical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at the Emory Transplant Center, and previously served as Medical Director for several dialysis facilities. His research focuses on understanding the reasons for racial, socioeconomic, and geographic disparity in access to renal transplantation, and on conducting quality improvement activities to decrease disparity in transplant access.

He currently chairs the Southeastern Kidney Transplant Coalition, organized by ESRD Network 6; its mission is to improve kidney transplant rates, which are the lowest in the Southeast United States, and to reduce the racial disparities in transplants for its patients. He serves on the board of directors of the National Kidney Foundation. He is also an active member of the National Forum of ESRD Networks board of directors.
