Nancy Armistead has 40 years’ experience working in the federally-funded ESRD program. Before her retirement in 2017, she was Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition and served as product lead for Quality Insights with responsibility for three CMS ESRD Network contracts. Among her accomplishments is the creation of the nationally recognized 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program which promotes patient safety in the dialysis setting. A primary area of expertise is in the field of kidney supportive care.

In collaboration with Alvin Moss, MD, she established the Coalition for Supportive Care of Kidney Patients which has over 400 members and a resource-rich website designed to assist the dialysis community in understanding and implementing supportive care for this vulnerable patient population. She obtained a number of national-level CMS contracts including a Peer-to-Peer Special Initiative, the Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative, and a Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey pilot project. Since her retirement she has served as a consultant to George Washington University on the Pathways Project, a supportive care initiative funded by the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation.

She was a co-editor and chapter author of Palliative Care in Nephrology published in 2020 by Oxford University Press. Ms. Armistead has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the American Journal of Medical Quality, and the Nephrology Nursing Journal. She has a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
