    Kidney Transplant Collective, Bi-Partisan Coalition in Congress Calls on Biden Administration to Take Action

    Nearly 50 bipartisan members of the United States House of Representatives last week sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center calling for more support for living kidney donors amid the ongoing crisis of end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

    Knewz.com has learned that the CMS Innovation Center previously proposed increasing kidney transplants through the Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) Model.

    From pigs to payouts, weighing solutions for the US kidney shortage

    Kidneys are currently the most needed organ in the country, and an ongoing crisis has left tens of thousands in limbo.

    As of September, nearly 90,000 people in the US are waiting for kidneys, but only around 27,000 transplants were performed in 2024, according to data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). That makes for a grim reality: One out of every 20 people on the waiting list die every year, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) estimates.
